CE REQUIREMENTS BY PROFESSION

CE credit approval for licensing and registration requirements is specific to state licensing and regulatory boards. Please review requirements for your specific licensure and/or registration requirements, highlighted below.

Ultimately, it is the attendee's sole responsibility to ensure continuing education units obtained from the Sandhill Institute are approved by their respective state licensing and regulatory board.

LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR

CODE OF STATE REGULATIONS
  • 20 CSR 2095-1.064 Continuing Education Requirements 
    ​PURPOSE: This rule establishes the requirements for continuing education. 
    (1) Pursuant to section 337.510.5, RSMo, all licensed professional counselors shall complete at least forty (40) hours of continuing education (CE) prior to the expiration date of the license. Such hours shall be relevant to the practice of professional counseling as defined in sections 337.500(5), (6), and (7), RSMo.
         (5) Formal continuing education is defined as follows:
              (D) Attending workshops, seminars, or continuing education courses relevant to counseling as defined in section 337.500(5), (6), and (7), RSMo. The licensee shall provide verification of attendance such as a certificate or letter of attendance indicating the date, time, and number of hours of continuing education from the workshop, seminar, or course provider;

  • 337.500 RSMo (6)  “Practice of professional counseling”, rendering, offering to render, or supervising those who render to individuals, couples, groups, organizations, institutions, corporations, schools, government agencies, or the general public any counseling service involving the application of counseling procedures, and the principles and methods thereof, to assist in achieving more effective intrapersonal or interpersonal, marital, decisional, social, educational, vocational, developmental, or rehabilitative adjustments;

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION

LICENSED MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPIST

CODE OF STATE REGULATIONS
  • 20 CSR 2233-2.050 Renewal of License
    PURPOSE: This rule provides information to licensed marital and family therapists regarding renewal of that license.
    (5) Effective August 28, 2008, a licensed marital and family therapist shall obtain forty (40) contact hours of continuing education (CE) prior to the expiration date of a license and such hours should consist of at least twenty (20) hours of formal continuing education hours with the balance of hours to be self-study. For the purpose of this regulation a contact hour shall consist of fifty (50) minutes.
         (A) Formal continuing education shall consist of one (1) or a combination of any of the following:
              4. Attending work shops, seminars, or continuing education courses relevant to marital and family therapy as defined in section 337.700(7) and (8), RSMo. Upon request by the state committee the licensee shall provide verification of attendance such as a certificate or letter of attendance indicating the date, time, and number of hours of continuing education from the workshop, seminar, or course provider.

RELEVANT STATUTE
  • 337.700 RSMo (7)  “Marital and family therapy”, the use of scientific and applied marriage and family theories, methods and procedures for the purpose of describing, diagnosing, evaluating and modifying marital, family and individual behavior within the context of marital and family systems, including the context of marital formation and dissolution.  Marriage and family therapy is based on systems theories, marriage and family development, normal and dysfunctional behavior, human sexuality and psychotherapeutic, marital and family therapy theories and techniques and includes the use of marriage and family therapy theories and techniques in the diagnosis, evaluation, assessment and treatment of intrapersonal or interpersonal dysfunctions within the context of marriage and family systems.  Marriage and family therapy may also include clinical research into more effective methods for the treatment and prevention of the above-named conditions;
  • 337.700 RSMo (8)  "Practice of marital and family therapy", the rendering of professional marital and family therapy services to individuals, family groups and marital pairs, singly or in groups, whether such services are offered directly to the general public or through organizations, either public or private, for a fee, monetary or otherwise;

PSYCHOLOGISTS

CODE OF STATE REGULATIONS
  • 20 CSR 2235-7.030 Categories of Continuing Education Programs and Credits
    PURPOSE: This rule implements the continuing education mandates.
    (1) The committee recognizes the following categories of continuing education programs, seminars or activities and established credit hours.
         (B) Category B other programs, seminars, or activities, a maximum of twenty-five (25) credits per reporting cycle of Category B activities may count towards the two (2)-year, forty (40) continuing education credit hour requirement in 20 CSR 2235-7.010. Category B programs, seminars, or activities are defined as--
              1. The categories of continuing education experiences and the number of hours of continuing education for each category are as follows:
                   B. Workshops, seminars and courses. Registered attendance at relevant nonaccredited workshops, seminars, colloquium, grand rounds or academic courses. Number of actual attendance hours;

  • 337.015 RSMo (3)  The "practice of psychology" within the meaning of this chapter is defined as the observation, description, evaluation, interpretation, treatment, and modification of human behavior by the application of psychological principles, methods, and procedures, for the purpose of preventing, treating, or eliminating symptomatic, maladaptive, or undesired behavior and of enhancing interpersonal relationships, work and life adjustment, personal effectiveness, behavioral health, and mental health.  The practice of psychology includes, but is not limited to, psychometric or psychological testing and the evaluation or assessment of personal characteristics, such as intelligence, personality, abilities, interests, aptitudes, and neuropsychological functioning; counseling, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, hypnosis, biofeedback, and behavior analysis and therapy; diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorder or disability in both inpatient and outpatient settings, alcoholism and substance abuse, disorders of habit or conduct, as well as the psychological aspects of physical illness, accident, injury, or disability; psychoeducational evaluation, therapy, remediation, and consultation; and teaching and training of psychological competence.  Psychological services may be rendered to individuals, families, groups, and the public.  The practice of psychology shall be construed within the meaning of this definition without regard to whether payment is received for services rendered.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION

LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER

CODE OF STATE REGULATIONS
  • 20 CSR 2263-2.082 Continuing Education
    PURPOSE: This rule sets continuing education requirements for renewal of licenses to practice as a licensed social worker and establishes the basic continuing education standards. The goal of continuing education is to ensure quality social work services to clients. The requirements for continuing education are grounded in the ethical principle to develop and enhance professional expertise and increase competence in service and delivery.
    (6) The required continuing education hours may be satisfied through any combination of the following activities:
         (I) Attending workshops or seminars, including live interactive webinars, approved by or sponsored by the following:
              1. National Association of Social Workers (NASW);
              2. Social service agency and/or organizational staff development unit (i.e., hospitals, nursing homes, residential treatment facility, etc.);
              3. Professional associations in the human services including, but not limited to the--
                   A. American Psychological Association (APA);
                   B. Missouri Psychological Association (MOPA);
                   C. American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT);
                   D. Missouri Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT);
                   E. American Counseling Association of Missouri (ACAM);
                   F. American Counselors Association (ACA);
                   G. American Mental Health Counseling Association (AMHCA);
                   H. Missouri Mental Health Counseling Association (MMHCA); and
                   I. Missouri Society for Clinical Social Workers (MSCSW);
              4. Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) or its successor—Approved Continuing Education (ACE);
              5. Accredited college or university; or
              6. Continuing education hours used to satisfy the continuing education requirements of another state may be submitted to fulfill the requirements of this state if the other state’s continuing education requirements are substantially equal to or greater than the requirements of this state.

STANDARDS FOR AWARDING

​CERTIFICATES OF ATTENDANCE

  • Certificates of Attendance will be awarded on the basis of one credit per one hour of instructional time.
  • Certificates of Attendance will include the following:
    • Name and date of program
    • Number of CE credits
    • Authorizing signature of the Sandhill Institute.
  • Verification of awarded Certificates of Attendance will be on record for four (4) years after the completion of the program.
